After Annie Beck came to Fort Lauderdale in 1916, the town was never the same. She formed many early women's groups and even arranged for a building to be shipped into town by rail to house the local Episcopal Church. When the great 1926 hurricane destroyed most local flora, she turned her interests to gardening and restoration of vegetation. Her modest house now sits on a small lot behind the trendy boutiques and restaurants of Las Olas Boulevard.
